Welcome to the My Providence Project, a collaboration between Roger Williams Middle School and Johnson & Wales University. This project represents the coming together of two different groups- an 8th grade RWMS class and the Graphic Solutions Team (GST), a service learning course in J&W's School of Technology. (Read more about GST in its section.) During the Fall of 2006, Liz Marks got together with J&W's Community Service Coordinator Katie MacLean to attempt to establish a way to work with kids in a local school who might benefit from the presence of our college students. Katie suggested Roger Williams because of her connection to them, and an alliance with drama teacher Kaydi McQuade from RWMS was established. The project Liz had in mind was to present a motivated group of students with disposable digital cameras so they might document their experiences living and going to school in Providence, RI. The diversity of Roger Williams' student body made this a potentially very exciting project. Kaydi had the perfect group to pair with the GST crew- a particularly motivated class who were eager to meet the college students and try their hands at photography.
We collected the cameras from the students in December and were back to help the students write about themselves and their experience taking photos in January. GST built this website to showcase the work of these students. All of these photos represent the vision of one of the Roger Williams students. Enjoy!
